Accessibility

This site should work for everyone, whatever device, browser or assistive technology you use. Here is what we have done, what we have checked, and how to tell us when something falls short.

Our goal

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA across the whole site.

What we have done

  • Contrast, measured. Every text colour pair on the site, in both the light and the dark theme, is measured when the site is built, and the build stops if any falls below 4.5:1. The lowest text pair today measures 5.13:1. Borders of form fields and focus outlines are held to at least 3:1.
  • Light and dark. The site follows your device’s light or dark setting, and the switch in the header lets you choose.
  • Keyboard. Everything works with a keyboard, focus is always visible, and a “Skip to content” link comes first on every page.
  • Structure. Pages use real headings, landmarks and lists, so screen readers can move around them.
  • Forms. Every field has a visible label. Errors are written in words, shown next to the field they belong to, and announced.
  • Size and zoom. Text can be enlarged, and the layout works from 320 pixels wide without sideways scrolling. Buttons and links in menus are at least 44 pixels tall.
  • Motion. There are no animations beyond small hover effects, and those are turned off if your device asks for reduced motion.
  • No images of text. Headings and text are real text. Diagrams are built from text, so they reflow.

What we have checked

We have checked the site with a keyboard only, at phone and desktop widths, in light and dark themes, and with automated contrast measurement. It has not yet been reviewed by people who rely on screen readers or other assistive technology, and we would welcome that feedback.

Known limitations

  • To stop automated spam, a form cannot be sent in the first few seconds after the page opens, and a page left open for more than a day needs to be reloaded before sending. If either happens, the site tells you what to do.
  • Some links go to government websites, which we do not control.
